For beginning students who have never touched music in their lives (mostly children), I start out with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book of their chosen instrument. From there, we learn how to read music, play in time, and play the instrument itself. Once the student feels comfortable with the practices in the book, I move on to introduce solo repertoire to prepare for a recital. For beginning students for playing the flute I would teach them about the horn, how to put it together, and the best way to blow into the mouthpiece with correct air support. What you learn from the start you tend to always carry with you, so it is best to learn correctly from the beginning.
