I like to begin all my students on a combination of technical studies and enjoyable/familiar melodies. This will help them learn the fundamentals in a rewarding way, because as they progress they will continue to learn new songs week after week. This is much more rewarding than checking of series of technical exercises. Additionally it is important to have both small goals to achieve each week and large goals to achieve over a number of months, so my students can be aware and proud of their progress over time. I try to inspire students to become passionate musicians and people through my teaching and by example. It is important to play from the heart and not just notes on a page. It makes music and flute playing all the more gratifying! I also provide a lot of positive encouragement for students in their music but also for their lives in general. As an adult, I have taken pedagogy with the head of the pedagogy department at Olivet Nazarene University, Piano from Dr. Karen Ball, flute from Gary Schocker, and voice lessons from members of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
