I believe in the philosophy of and empty cup. My lessons are not built for me to tell the student what to do, but rather learn how they learn and research the best practices for reaching that student. There is no "cookie cutter" method that works for all students, because everyone learns and comprehends a little bit differently. I remain sensitive to that and patient with my students. I believe that everything begins with fundamentals. That being said, it's most important to learn what the students goal is. Perhaps they only want to learn a particular piece that they are playing for Solo and Ensemble Contest. Perhaps it's an adult student that just wants to learn to play a particular piece for a special occasion. Lessons have to be tailored to to meet the individual students desires. I find teaching more rewarding than performing. Seeing a student progress and make improvements gives me joy and seeing them find there own distinct beautiful sound is important to me.
