For beginning woodwind students, I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or whatever the student's school band book is. Once the student knows how to read music and can play enough notes, I like to introduce scales. This provides a good foundation for moving on to duets and solo pieces, which are more enjoyable to play. I originally began teaching while in college teaching students on both flute and oboe. I began teaching students out of my home several years ago and taught for about 3 years until I moved and my students were not able to continue with me. I feel it is very important to have proper hand position and the proper way to play the instrument and initially spend time making sure these very basic foundations are correct, but have creative ways to help the students so they learn quickly and enjoy it as well! For students who are just starting out, I start with basic finger and breath support exercises. Once these become ingrained in the student's mind, I will introduce various excerpts based on their skill level, eventually working our way into solo repertoire. For students that have a few years under their belt, I prefer to get a grasp on what their strength and weaknesses are to assess what I can be of service, to select the solo or excerpt book that would best help improve their already developing talents.
