During my years of teaching in East Lansing Michigan my band programs continually earned first and second division ratings at festivals. After doing that I made sure to do 20-30 minutes of scales just to make sure I work on my fundamentals. I might work with the student to make a practice journal so that they can possibly hold themselves accountable and so we can both track what they are doing!
