A method I use to encourage my student’s progress is to give them stars for when they work on their assignment; the stars they earn will allow the student to choose a song of their choice that is not from the same genre being studied—this may be a pop song. I strive to make abstract concepts concrete by using actions and icons, especially for younger students.
