My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 40 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. For beginner students, I typically start with Rubank Elemetary Method for Flute. However, if you have a different method book, I am happy to teach using that book, if I find it to be a credible source. For intermediate to advanced students, I prefer to use the Rubank Advanced Method Books 1 and 2, but again, if you have your own books, if I approve, we can use those books instead. As a musician myself, I enjoy the cooperative element of music so I readily have an instrument around that I can play along with the student to help further innate musicianship for all skill levels of instrumentalists. For beginners I enjoy using Standards of Excellence from Kjos publishing or Sound Innovations from Alfred publishing and custom tailor exercises to fit the strengths and challenges of every student I teach.
