That being said, sometimes learning songs (covers) can be the best way to learn quickly and it can be a lot of fun. Something I've done many times too is writing precise exercises for students in order to address and target specific needs. I teach, technique, reading, coordination, and improvisation pretty much in that order. They are like stepping stones to really being able to play. You need the basic technique to get your hands moving, then you need to read to understand rhythms and counting etc, then you need coordination if you are playing drumset, then you can start to create something that is yours!
