Most of my lesson plans are customized for each student, depending the style they are interested in, and the level that they are already playing. Generally speaking for beginners, I begin with teaching about the instrument (string names, frets, tuning, etc.). Then we move on to chords, starting with the easiest ones to play. I am a musician with 16 years plus of music experience. My main instrument is guitar but I have learned many other instruments over the years such as piano, bass guitar, banjo, and drums. I learned to read music in high school band as an auxiliary percussionist (playing bells, xylophone, and various percussion instruments) as well as singing in the choir. A passion for learning music is never something that can be forced. Therefore, when teaching a student, I never force them to achieve unattainable goals. I encourage them to learn at their own pace with "stepping-stone" goals; my students learn rudiments that build onto progressively more advanced techniques! I will also look at songs pertaining to their chosen instrument and their current proficiency at said instrument.
