Hello! I am a professional saxophone player in the great musical city of New Orleans. I recently moved from my home state of Massachusetts working as a director of an after school music program for youth, to pursue a career as a performer. My methods are unique and effective. First I share with my students the history and culture of the instrument. Then I teach how the instrument works, explaining every detail. I use simple exercises that quickly ingrain a foundation for progression. Next I build confidence by playing along in collaboration, while teaching synchronization and tempo. I have had extensive lessons on all ends of the music education spectrum. I took informal guitar lessons from rock n roll musicians who couldn't read music while I was in middle school/high school, and I took classical lessons while in college from professors who couldn't improvise in more than one or two styles (or sometimes none). I am not strict in one specific style. I try to be malleable in my approach as I get to know the habits and abilities of each individual. I've had students for whom I thought it best to be more rigid and repetitive drill based, while others seem to benefit from a more passive guru. It's a spectrum. Always, though, I try to control the pace of the session, to speak thoughtfully, honestly, and constructively whilst always maintaining the utmost respect for the struggles that a student is facing.
