I focus on the student's preferred genre and songs, and I make theory work for those particular songs; i.e. I find common chord progressions, their related scales, and have students improvise using those scales [though I emphasize chord tones, syncopation and more ... equally, not just scales]). I am the epitome of patience, and I always seek to reassess a student's goals so as to hit the target as ideally on as possible (no sense in learning the complexity of jazz when punk rock is your only love!). Every student is different, with different goals, different passions, and different backgrounds. So every student needs a different teaching method. I prefer to spend some time in the first lesson getting to know the student and his or her background to determine what specific methods work best for them. I like to put concepts into a musical application as soon as we can. Once the student has a grasp of the basic 4/4 pattern, I have them loop it while I accompany them on bass or guitar. Read More
