I approach teaching as a purely collaborative endeavor. In initially meeting a student, I ask many questions in order to gage what has inspired the student to study drums, and what particular genres of music and/or artists have brought them to the point of lesson inquiry. I Try to get away from mechanism without joy. Everything has to be close to the music. Exercises to be actually doing them with a rhythm and time. Other than doing things musically, practicing in different times and intentions help a lot for the student to be open to play songs in different ways. Technique and theory are necessary tools. I have two main goals as a teacher, no matter the age or experience level of the student. The first is that the student enjoys learning their instrument, so I tailor my teaching and curriculum specifically to each individual student. The second is that the student is consistently improving each week, and properly motivated to practice. This is the only way they will achieve their musical and artistic dreams.
