For beginners I intent to teach the main guidelines of the instrument such as its properties, history and basic techniques to play properly. Then, I proceed to show them the fundamentals of the instrument such as scales and rhythm exercises to start. I'm trying to put each student in touch with their inner creative. Everyone learns at a different pace and my approach is to teach something to mastery level rather than fill a quota. Inspiration and the joy of playing is first and foremost with my approach. I focus on the student's preferred genre and songs, and I make theory work for those particular songs; i.e. I find common chord progressions, their related scales, and have students improvise using those scales [though I emphasize chord tones, syncopation and more ... equally, not just scales]). I am the epitome of patience, and I always seek to reassess a student's goals so as to hit the target as ideally on as possible (no sense in learning the complexity of jazz when punk rock is your only love!).
