I consider myself to be a Swiss Army Musician. I earned my BS in Music Ed from Western Carolina University and my MM in Percussion from Appalachian State University. I love variety more than anything! I love widening my perspective by dipping my toes into as many different styles and instruments as possible. As far as my teaching style is concerned, I strongly believe in teaching one "how to fish," as opposed to just letting them eat for a day. I purposely introduce material and techniques that are outside of the student's playing ability early on, so as to push them exponentially past whatever they originally "thought" they could do. To some, this pedagogical approach may seem a little extreme, but in my 10+ years of teaching, I've found that every student that has decided to stick with this style has found themselves playing some of the very styles and techniques that they never thought possible before. I have been teaching oof and on for the last 20 years. I have been playing professionally for the last 27 years. I played in my high school marching band and in the symphonic orchestra. I studied under Tony Casselli and Tom Tehdran. I've been in a variety of bands from dinner/oldies bands to rock. My current studio has two drum sets and a DW practice pad set. For teaching I will start with basic technique and rudimentary skills needed to perform on a drum set. After mastery, I will start to incorporate other pieces of the drum/drum set into our lessons. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Basic Rudimentary movements. I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
