I began my musical career playing clarinet and saxophone for the Marine Forces Pacific Band in Honolulu, Hawaii. While serving, I was the concertmaster, clarinet section leader, and leader of the woodwind quintet for a combination of 300+ performances around the world. I also have several years of experience playing saxophone in a Latin big band located in Honolulu, Hawaii - Son Caribe. I will use a calender or notebook to track the progress of every week for each student, so that he/she can always refreshes when he/she practices at home. Also, I will recommend several recordings to students to listen to, and try to analyze those music in very understandable sense so that students can have fun in their instrumental learning. I loved getting new students excited about music, and helping them have fun while they learn! I've followed this passion all the way to Chicago, where I still teach beginning students at Central Middle School in Tinley Park. "Live" practice would be an ideal way to describe how I teach. I never encourage too much of one practice or rote memorization. The mind consolidates information more quickly and makes many more neural connections through variety and "new stimuli." Many practices in our culture can be boring and lack efficiency because they lack these basic principles. As educators, we really need to turn that "dead" practice into "live" practice. Read More
