I began my teaching experience in 2016, when I began work as a band camp instructor during my student teaching semester in college. Since then, I have served as a high school band director for three years before stepping away to pursue other musical opportunities. Typically in the first lesson, I assess the playing level of the student by asking them general questions about what they have done with music so far. From there it is easy for me to determine what to begin teaching first. For beginner students, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book. If the student has graduated from the beginner book, then I can proceed to intermediate or advanced methods which will include a combination of studies in pedagogy, repertoire, composers, etudes, ensemble work, and technical studies. I was also an instructor at the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp, a counselor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and the Music Mentor of the Resident College of Arts in Humanities at MSU.
