I like to first access the student and their proficiency level. Once I discover your weak points I focus on them and drill them to perfection. Once we have those down. It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Graduated Southern University, home of the world famous "Human Jukebox" which I was a member of for 3 years, as well as playing for my church since I was 13. No matter what age, any starting clarinetist needs to understand the fundamentals of the clarinet. Once these fundamentals are acquired, we move on to the basics of reading music and playing the clarinet such as learning the circle of fourths and practicing pieces of music that is from a certain major scale. Ear training and music theory will also be involved in each lesson to understand music further. Saxophone/flute: Any beginning band method book or standard beginning to intermediate woodwind book. Appropriate repertoire. Piano: I use most beginning methods, including Alfred, Bastien, Piano Adventures (Faber), and other standard piano methods. I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument.
