As a musician myself, I enjoy the cooperative element of music so I readily have an instrument around that I can play along with the student to help further innate musicianship for all skill levels of instrumentalists. For beginners I enjoy using Standards of Excellence from Kjos publishing or Sound Innovations from Alfred publishing and custom tailor exercises to fit the strengths and challenges of every student I teach. Once a beginner has grasped the very basics I quickly find them some repertoire they want to work on so they can play a ‘real piece of music’. I find that students love that first realisation that they really can play their instrument. For more advanced students or adults we work on repertoire they like and that will push them forward. My teaching expereince dates back to before I graduated undergraduate school. Since I had a semester to wait for Commencement, I was afforded an opportunity to work as a Teacher assistant, in an Open Classroom Learning Environment. This immediately preceded a very rewarding Student Teaching experience in the rural southern state of North Carolina. I was as challenging an experience as I have ever had being that my travel mileage on some days was as much as 80 miles. Upon my return to New York, I was afforded an opportunity to teach Beginner Band Grades 4,5 and 6, per diem for one year. I believe that hard work and dedication is important to learning an instrument, but each student responds to different teaching styles and that in turn influences their motivation to practice.
