My teaching experience is varied, as I started as a music theory teacher in a piano studio, from 1995 to 2001. I taught theory to small groups of students, ages 3 to adult. I began teaching private clarinet lessons in earnest in 2005, working out of a music store in La Mesa; I taught there until 2011. Younger students have typically needed assistance in their beginning band repertoire, while older students are eager to branch off and do solos and chamber ensembles. I help them select the repertoire that is best for them--but ultimately allow them to make the choice. Every lesson, I incorporate duets. Nothing improves students like playing with someone else. I started teaching clarinet privately in 2012 during my undergraduate career and have been teaching students consistently ever since. I often encourage my students to bring in music that they would like to learn because working on music that you are inspired by and excited about encourages practicing (the same goes for me too!). I encourage students to enter as many performance opportunities as they can, especially since I am an avid performer myself, and am looking to expand my studio so that I can create student recitals where my students will be able to share their music and perform for each other. With beginning students, I start with the fundamentals of the instrument, including embouchure and finger technique, as well as the ability to breathe properly, which is fundamental to playing any wind instrument.  I also introduce beginning students to basic musical concepts, such as reading music, and tailor the musical selection to their tastes or to whatever group they are playing in, most often a school band class.  For more advanced students, I observe what areas the student needs the most work in and tailor the lessons specifically to dealing with those areas, as well as catering to their individual musical tastes.
