EXPERIENCE

I have over 20 years of teaching experience, and over 9 years teaching private clarinet and saxophone lessons in the Bay Area. Most of my gigs are classical clarinet, but I also play musicals as well. I have taught lessons and sectionals all over the Bat Area and have taught at CSU Stanislaus, and UC Santa Cruz. I believe in consistent practice to improve your abilities on your instrument, but also believe in having fun during out lessons. I encourage my students to be engaged with ensembles and competitions in their area as this encourages growth, and can be great experiences.

METHODS USED

For both Clarinet and Saxophone I like to start in the Rubank Elementary method. As the student progresses, I often will add two books, Learn to Play Duets and also Fun for the Clarinet/Saxophone. The last one are two separate books, but one for each instrument. I usually prescribe adults the same books to start. I move on to Rubank Intermediate, and then move to Hite, Melodious and Progressive Etudes. While they're working in the second Rubank and Hite, they'll also be working on some smaller solos, duets and other fun tunes.

LESSON STYLE

I love teaching students, I try and adapt my approach to each student, as each student has their own education needs. I am strict teacher, but care about my students and their development. I work fundamental, A LOT. This is the backbone of our abilities and we need to make sure it's working all the time! I work with the student to try and find what they want to work on in addition to our fundamental practice. The only way to improve is consistent daily, mindful practice. These skills will help you in life!

Our son has been taking clarinet lessons with James since 2015. Private lessons with James has made a huge difference, and our son has gotten into honors band. James is a very gifted teacher who works with the student's strengths and motivates them to improve their playing skills.

As a former teacher myself, I know good teachers when I see them. James is the best! I have been taking clarinet lessons with him for 2 years. I played the clarinet in elementary school and have taken it up again in retirement. My goal is to play with local amateur orchestras. I have learned so much, and expect that after COVID subsides and orchestras resume, I will be able to contribute successfully. He is an excellent teacher and sets the highest standards.

James has been working with my 16 year old for 2-3 years and we have been nothing but delighted! He is a very thorough teacher, he comes up with excellent personalized exercises, he is very knowledgable regarding clarinet technique, and he is extremely professional. He gives really good guidelines for how to independently express the music with personal style. He inspires my son to work hard and he challenges him to play musically and do his very best work. He has adapted really well to having to teach lessons on-line once Covid become an issue also. We recommend him to anyone hoping to advance and develop their clarinet or saxophone skills!

My son really enjoys virtual clarinet lessons with James. His positive and organized style keeps my son motivated to keep practicing between his lessons. He's always in a good mood after his lesson and I can hear the improvement each month.
