For beginning students who are younger, I prefer starting them with beginner method books and ear training. Brain and physical development can proceed at very different rates. I believe in the constant testing of the student's readiness of various musical elements such as absolute pitch, rhythm, reading, finger control, note reading, attention span, interest in music, intelligence, etc. Finding each child's strength and weakness will be the key to determine the path of the repertoire they will be playing. High school students will work out of the Blue Standards of Excellence book for their freshman and sophomore year; along with a more advanced packet of warm up and scale exercises that I received from the ASU clarinet studio and my current clarinet professor Jeff Quamo. Junior year and senior year students will be expected to know at least 80% of the circle of 5ths and they'll begin to start playing etudes out of the Rose Etude book along with studying farther into the warm-up and practice packet. For younger students who are in a school band program, I like to use the materials they use in class and to add outside material they find interesting. I find students are more motivated to practice and develop when we start with something that interests them, and then to expose them to other styles of music later on. For older or more advanced students, I like to focus on aspects of musicianship that will help them be successful musicians, such as ear-training, theory, composition, performance practice, improvisation (if the student wishes) and transcribing. I custom-tailor my lesson plans for each individual student based on a variety of factors such as prior playing experience (if applicable), student's desired goals and outcomes, student availability, etc. A typical first lesson with me will be spent going over what goals you want to achieve and how I can best serve you in reaching those goals by working with you to develop an effective plan of practice. In addition, I will share the knowledge and expertise I have gathered from my teachers and my own musical career to ensure that you have all of the tools and resources you need to start seeing the results you want. My teaching style is very straight forward, I am not a strict teacher. I always try to enlighten my students to find their own voice in music by encouraging and inspiring. I want my students to understand they do not have to sound or play like anybody but themselves, which make their music unique and beautiful. I would expect my students to follow my instructions, and come to lessons prepared. Read More

My ultimate goal as a teacher is to create independent musicians capable of creative thinking and musicality long after they have left my studio. While reading the notes and rhythms is obviously important, understanding why those notes, rhythms or markings are in the music will help students develop and learn musicianship skills that are often overlooked. Providing students with performance opportunities and sharing my passion for music help students stay encouraged and become creative and independent thinkers not just in music, but other areas of life as well. A child will not learn to play an instrument overnight or in one week, the commitment to practice and keeping track of that practice is essential. Nothing helps us learn better than encouragement, even when it sounds bad. Any teacher can tell if a student hasn't practiced or put forth a good effort. Sometimes, you do have to let them know you know, but you try to do so gently. Read More
