I first began teaching as an undergraduate college student in 2002. One of my childhood piano teachers invited me to teach violin, viola, and cello in her studio of primarily piano students. A short time later, after being hired as an accompanist at a local string studio, I was hired as a string teacher within the studio, where I taught for several years. When someone wants to learn how to play an instrument well enough to play in a band or orchestra, I usually consider two needs - playing music and interpreting written music. In addition, historical and theoretical subjects are introduced appropriately to keep the student engaged no matter their current abilities. We also have at least two public performances a year at a venue which has a high quality grand piano so the students can get used to the notion that every piano will be different and performing scales before playing their chosen repertoire will help them immensely. My teaching style is to focus on the natural talent of the student and build on that. Each student has different strong and weak points and each student works at a different pace. My job is to motivate the student into becoming a confident cellist and a hard worker. Discipline, strong work ethic, consistency, and attention to detail are key factors in becoming a good cellist. And understanding the basic elements of cello playing is a very important requirement in my class. Read More
