I prefer to solidify technique with studies so that in the repertoire, students are comfortable enough with the technical demands to develop their individual musical voices. In other words, I use like to use exercises to develop a new technique, etudes/studies to push students out of their comfort zone, while keeping repertoire assignments within their comfort zone to allow them to exercise their creativity in different areas. After Book 1, we can explore Book 2 or start looking at more difficult repertoire. For intermediate or advanced students, we will focus a lot of one and two octave scales and being to introduce either the Suzuki book series or standard repertoire. Advanced students will also use books 5-7 of Suzuki, standard repertoire, and two to three octave scales. There is no one style one must follow. Rather, one's style is developed over a lifetime. My goal in cello teaching is to teach the correct way practice and play the instrument. A cellist grows in the degree of effort and practice. Correct rudiments will last a lifetime that will assist each student develop to the degree they wish to. For any student, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements series. This method book will help teach the basic fundamentals needed to progress on the instrument. For children, I will continue through the method book series while supplementing it with short popular pieces that may be of interest to the student. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep it fun and enjoyable. Read More
