A practical level of playing is always achievable, keeping in mind one's (typically busy) schedule. So small increments of self practice are necessary, gradually increasing stamina and confidence. Time on instrument is most important, for whatever one plays. Improvisation (playing on the fly) is a part of music that I have always enjoyed and appreciated, especially in a collective setting. What do you like about their music? What are your goals with taking lessons? I use this information to teach the student how to play some of their favorite songs, how to write similar music, and how to use my lessons as a means of achieving their musical goals I have found that doing so results in faster results, and increased motivation.
