As already stated, my approach stresses understanding a mastery of "the basics" of musical knowledge and instrument-specific knowledge and skills -while adapting to the individual strengths/weaknesses and interests... of the individual students. Among other things, my approach emphasizes empowering students by quickly and efficiently imparting essential and useful knowledge and "real skills" that enable students to know and demonstrate, at will, music knowledge and ability. I have been teaching since 1996, beginning as a teenager, teaching out of my house. From 2000-2002, I taught at Southern California's "Sounds of Music" music store, at one point having over 50 weekly students spread over 4 days. From 2002-2004 I taught at Pete's Music, also in Southern California. The Shapiro Project has recorded two albums with my original music and is getting ready to record the third at the end of 2018. I have received two Fellowships in Composition from Nevada Arts Council, as well as numerous ASCAPlus Jazz and Pop Awards, and an honorable mention in the Billboard Songwriting Contest. I teach music differently. When learning a skill, consistency equals success. Lessons have to be engaging, personalized and fun. When teaching my students, I find out what music they love, their favorite songs and artists. I find out what music they would love to learn. Then I let that guide my instruction by teaching the students songs they want to learn (while teaching chords, theory and ways to improve) starting with the easier songs to keep it fun and engaging.
