I continued teaching private lessons, while also conducting a high school youth choir in Chicagoland after moving to IL. After a few years my family and I moved to the greater Cincinnati area where I currently teach as a high school choral and drama teacher while serving as the theatre manager as well. Basically I start with questions on why the individual wants to learn how to play that particular instrument. Then I follow with how much do they know about the instrument of their choice. So following a brief historical lesson we get into how to start playing that instrument. Also why I love to play that instrument and why I'm playing it with passion. I was a music education major at Roosevelt Univ. and have personal experience teaching all ages from grammar school to entry level college students.I have taught in private studios and traveled to students' homes. I teach various instruments from beginners to various levels of accomplishment and when a student has that bright light moment when something clicks, it's truly a pleasure moment. I teach more than just an instrument,I teach music.This helps a student move forward and discover things on their own, such as how to play what they create in their head and how to get that to their instrument which is what communicates to an audience. I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well.
