Learning isn't a photocopy process which means a lot of the learning process is a responsibility of the student. I view my job as a teacher is to 1) make sure the student isn't getting overwhelmed, 2) hold the student accountable for their learning, and 3) guiding students through experiences that will facilitate their learning. My goals as a teacher are to 1) bring students to the highest level of technical ability they are able to attain, and 2) develop in the student the highest level of musicianship possible through theory and ear training. For students who are already in an instrumental program through school, I will start with whatever method book they are using at school, and branch off from there. Depending on the instrument, I will bring in another method book specific to that instrument book and we will also use some sort of etude book. I am a graduate of National Kiev Conservatory of Music with Master Degree in both Violin Performance and Music Education. After graduation from conservatory I worked full time in the State Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine for 10 years and then another 8 years in national Kiev Opera and Ballet Theater. Each lesson varies according to the needs and level of the student. A typical lesson would start out with some kind of technique exercise, scales, and arpeggios. Then we would move on to some kind of musical piece. The song will be learned in its correct form with all proper notes, rhythms, dynamics and tempo markings. Musicality and terminology will also be discussed. Singing will also be implemented at any point during the lesson with regards to intonation, phrasing, or musical gesture. Read More
