I am a senior at Northwestern pursuing my Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance and I’ll be headed to Boston in the fall to start my Masters of Music at the New England Conservatory. My love for music has taken me all over the world with performances across the country as well as in several European cities. I will vary my methods based on the individual student. For students between 3 and 7, I will use the Suzuki method, which in my experience is best for students of that age. For beginners after that, I will use method books and repertoire that not only addresses the students technical and musical development at that point in time, but is also fun and enjoyable to play. I like having my students take advantage of any school/local recital opportunities that might arise as it provides great experience. My students get to choose some of their repertoire and lesson content as it makes it more enjoyable for them. I do require all students to play scales as they provide an essential foundation for all that they will play. I was brought up with the Suzuki method. Therefore, I do use that as my main method to teach. However, since the start of my experience as a teacher, I have learned new methods of teaching. As a result, I am very open to different teaching methods. My preferred method is Suzuki. I also want to know that students are enjoying playing and practicing their instrument. To achieve this, I generally provide duets for students to play with me as well as another piece of music outside of the method we are using. Read More
