For beginning students, I normally start with Essential Elements then move onto Schlossberg and Irons for tone and flexibility; then I start them on the Clarke studies 1st and 2nd studies. I emphasize finger exercises, flexibility, tone, and sight reading. Once the student is advanced enough I start teaching appropriate literature. I create my own custom lesson plans upon each students needs/wants. After an assessment of skills I create a plan to help the student harness in on the things that need work and polish the skill sets that are already there. Usually, I pick a good series of lesson books that we will work through together. I started teaching guitar lessons in 1999 (20 years this year!) Since those days I've gotten two degrees and taught at colleges, and private institutions, as well as high school and middle schools. I've found that combining textbook music instruction along with learning to play some of the music the student is listening to keeps them growing and engaged.
