My main music philosophy is to teach sound before sight: teach students to hear the music, and then read the notation. For beginners, I want them to become well acquainted with their instrument so I begin with the basic fundamentals, and then teach some traditional tunes before moving on to reading music. Instilling a fundamental mastery of the instrument and musicianship is my top priority, no matter how long it may take. My approach to methods will vary depending on the student. For beginners, I like using the Robert Getchell books, in addition to the My First Arban, Essential Elements, and my own exercises. Although I do use method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, I like to tailor warm ups and fundamentals to each of my students. Then, I like to incorporate the fundamentals into familiar songs and exercises to keep the lessons engaging and fun. I'm currently the 2nd trombonist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and regular member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
