I have been teaching private lessons at Northside Christian School for almost 2 full years at this point, and have been helping out during marching band season every year since 2017. During the first part of 2021, I have also substituted for jazz instructor during the school year of Tarpon Springs High School, and while there I have taught more students on jazz improvisation as well as fundamentals on the trombone. My first teaching experiences were with my father during solo and ensemble. Having hired me as an accompanist for his students, I found myself rehearsing these students moreso than accompanying them. From that point I felt encouraged to teach and help others perfect their craft. My biggest influences would have to be my past teachers, one of which taught me younger and the other as I matured. I believe that while learning to read and write sheet music, developing technique and feel, and understanding music theory are all important, the most integral part of learning an instrument - as fundamental as it sounds - is to use your ears! For beginning trombone students, I typically work with the Rubank Elementary Method (old, but it works well), the Emory Remington Warm-Up Studies, and various material that I compose to help a student overcome their weaknesses. Scales make up a major part of any student's learning, and once a student masters the basics of the trombone, I move on to appropriate solo repertoire based on the student's progress and interests.
