I have a few method books that I like to use in my lessons. For brass students, I like the Rubank method books for beginners and the Arban book for advanced students. For young beginners on classical piano, I like "Music Tree," and the Faber "Piano Adventures" series, and for older kids I use the Bastien literature series. I encourage my students, whether private or the ones that I teach a school to practice on a consistent basis (have a consistent schedule for practice) because it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument or their voice. I've also found that a combination of different musical genres helps to motivate a student and allow them to have fun. With young beginner students, I start with either the Essential Elements books for wind instruments or the Faber method for piano. After basic musical skills have been developed I'll move on to more interesting solo pieces based on the interests and needs of the students.
