As a teacher, I believe that the study of music can be beneficial for anyone, whether they choose to become professional musicians or not. With young beginner students, I start with either the Essential Elements books for wind instruments or the Faber method for piano. After basic musical skills have been developed I'll move on to more interesting solo pieces based on the interests and needs of the students. With adults, I tend to talk to them a little more specifically about what their musical goals and influences are and help them to achieve them in their playing. Read More

During the first lesson, I typically try to find out the level of the student. Once the student's level is known (beginners-advance, children-adults), not just playing and or singing ability, but their knowledge of theory, the names of the lines and spaces, the value of notes and rests, the names of the major clefs (treble and bass), etc., then we will better know what method books to engage a student in. For beginners, I recommend Standards of Excellence and if the parent's budget allows, a subscription to Smart Music which can monitor and record daily practice and inform a student of minor errors so growth can happen between lessons. For intermediate or advanced students, I like to establish a well rounded warm-up routine for their practice and move into solo repertoire appropriate for their level. For adults, I like to cater towards their goals and desires. Read More
