I'm a professional trombonist, specializing in the fields of orchestral classical music, and also avant garde contemporary music, and improvised creative music. I was the first trombonist to graduate with a BM from the Colburn School, an intensely rigorous, professional level orchestra, and conservatory, I had the opportunity to work with the Ensemble Modern one of the premier European new music ensembles, and Frank Zappa's self proclaimed "last band".  In 2014, I graduated from the California Institute of the Arts,  where I studied composition, experimental music, and improvisation, and focused primarily on developing my own style of live electronics and improvisation via the trombone. Learning a musical instrument should always be a very rewarding and satisfying experience.  Therefore, I have a large variety of techniques in my musical bag of tricks to challenge all types of learners.  During my 10 years as a full time band director, I have developed many musical "games", often based on Suzuki methods, to make learning fundamentals, scales, and repertoire much more enjoyable.  These include practice rewards, Band Olympics, ninja karate belts, and Harry Potter themed games. I start each student off with the basics once they master the basics of both music theory and performance (this includes concurring any stage fright they may have) then I will allow them to chose their own repertoire and I generally switch back and forth so that every other week is the repertoire of their choosing and the following week is continued progress and visitation on the theoretical and technical aspects. My lessons include theory, ear-training and voice training within the context of games and enjoyable activities, as well as technique appropriate to the solos students are working on. I talk about where the music comes from, the composers, and other ideas to make lessons more interesting. We often perform pieces for parents and siblings to show them our progress, and recitals are an exciting culmination of a unit. Read More
