Yezi started teaching since 2015, and she has experiences in teaching both beginner, intermediate, and advanced students in different levels and ages. The teaching repertoire is based on students’ interests and requirements, including classical, pop music, and jazz, etc. Yezi works toward in combining different musical styles to cultivate students’ interests in music. At the same time, she focus on teaching music performance and theory at the same time in order to help student better understanding the music.
I began to teach in 2015 in China. My teaching experiences include beginners, intermediate, advanced students, and professional piano students, in all kinds of age levels. Some of my students received prizes and passed the piano examination in different levels such as ABRSM. Besides, I also have some adult students who wish to build up piano techniques and music theory in order to play pop songs and composition. My teaching strives to treat students as individuals, using different teaching methods to help each one to achieve their full potential. My favorite thing is to play with my students! Because I have many accompaniment experiences, I love to improvise the accompaniment part to pair with students’ playing. As we know, some music pieces for beginners are not that “fun” to play, but once it becomes a four-hand piano duet or piano duo, believe me, it sounds amazing!
Music performance and music theory are a unit, so both are imperative in the path of studying piano. Therefore, I always teach piano and a little bit of theory at the same time. It would greatly help students to understand the music and be easier to self-learn piano in the future. For young beginners, Faber's piano textbook is one of the opticians, as it has colorful pictures and easy-understanding examples which is more accessible for kids. At the same time, I would like to choose some popular songs, folk tune, or holiday music to cultivate their interests in music. I also like to piano the accompaniment for students. Sometimes, the repertoires for beginners are only single notes which is not that "fun" to play with. However, the accompaniment will fuller the harmonic sound and make it more interesting. For older beginners, I usually choose Hal Leonard's book. This book is a combination of music theory, repertoire, and technique training which is a very effective and practical choice. Building up a healthy playing habit is crucial in the beginning stage. My studying during master's and doctoral in piano performance and piano pedagogy would help students to have the correct and healthy techniques. Meanwhile, I would like to insert some contents on musical terms, composers, and music appreciation. Also, the practice will not limit to the textbook only, it will be chosen from all musical genres such as jazz, pop, and swing as well. For students older than 10 years old, they have a great understanding of music, so learning multiple styles of music is very important. For intermediate, advanced, and performs signal students, the repertoire will be picked from different music periods such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th century. Cultivating their music taste and their own thinking about music is important at this stage. Also, with the music requiring more techniques, fixing the performance issues is important. I will also teach students how to polish the music by producing different sounds on piano.
First, to understand how children learn and relate well to children is a very important ability for teachers. Think about our childhood, most of the things we are good at were started from a tiny sparkle of interest on it. Studying music is the same, so cultivating interesting and music taste is much more important than “just play.” I use accompaniment, partial analysis, combination of visual and aural studying, and other methods to stimulate students’ interests in music and piano. Meanwhile, I encourage student to set small and realistic goal in each lesson so they could clearly see their progress. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel students’ desire to progress, as well as makes students eager to learn more. I can successfully tailor my instructions to student’s wants and needs by trying to find out what inspires the student.
