Overview:

I’ve been a dedicated performer, teacher and student of music since 2003. I have a passion for sharing the joy of music with students of all ages and with my community at large. My unique training in music from many different parts of the world (West Africa, India, Indonesia, Iran & Eastern Europe) has given me a deep perspective on the numerous ways of teaching music and how it positively impacts society. My mission is to empower individuals and communities through the universal means of music, one string at a time!

EXPERIENCE

I was very fortunate to study guitar performance and composition at the Interlochen Academy of the Arts from ages 14-18. This gave me a firm understanding of the guitar and music theory, hence I have been teaching privately for almost eight years now. My education continued as I received my BFA and MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and taught for the schools unique Community Arts Partnership program. I truly enjoy teaching and bringing the joy of music to students of all ages. I emphasize developing proper technique from the start so students can learn to play with ease and comfort. I have a huge musical repertoire and encourage students to request songs that they would like to learn in our lessons. I do not believe that music theory should be separated from music practice. So whether you're interested in jazz, punk, blues, classical or anything in between, I can teach you the theory behind it and allow you to have firm understanding of the music you love. For more advanced students, I have extensive training in improvisation, composition and world music. If things like odd time signatures, Raga music from India or African poly-rhythms are up your alley, I'm the teacher for you:)

METHODS USED

For my younger students I like to teach fun, recognizable songs and mix in some basic music theory. In my experience, children can learn and memorize very well when engaged with songs they can relate to. For adults, I like to assess what the individual students goals are and create a lesson program specifically created for that. For example, whether a student want's to exceed in reading music and classical repertoire or improvising lead blues guitar, a combination of technique, repertoire and theory can achieve any such goals.

LESSON STYLE

Because of my diverse musical training, I excel in creating custom lesson-plans to help each student reach their goals. For younger students who have don't such specific goals, I can engage and fuel their passion for music by my experience-based methods that emphasize technique, familiar songs and theory. I am patient and encourage creativity and growth in lessons. Every-person has a different learning style and I am quick to discover how to identify that for my students. I strive to make each lesson fun, stimulating and engaging. I have such a deep love for music and it is truly a joy for me to share it with my community.
