Vicki is a classically trained violinist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. She believes that with proper and efficient training, anyone can reach their goals on violin playing. Her goal as an educator is to provide students with resources to further develop their musical technique with an organized mindset. For the past 7 summers, she has performed at the Emerging Artists Concert in UVM Music Hall in Burlington, Vermont. Through CCM’s Young Artist Program, she also had the opportunity to give recitals and interact with audience members at retirement communities in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the summer of 2018 and 2019, Vicki collaborated with pianist, Professor Yea- Shiuh Lin and cellist, Professor Min-Yuan Lin performing in Taipei’s National Concert Hall, Taichung’s National Opera Theater, and Takanawa Civic Concert Hall in Tokyo, Japan. She is a member of the Vespre String Quartet formed in 2018 and they will be giving concerts in Winter of 2020 to 2021.
My passion for teaching began in 2010 as a teaching assistant, teaching beginning music group lessons for first to third graders. Since then, I have been giving private lessons both in person and via online platforms. As a doctoral candidate, I am currently serving as a teaching assistant and instructing private technique lessons for college level students. I believe that having the proper training on technique is essential, as it is one of the most effective way to express and enlarge students’ musical ideas and interpretation.
My teaching method is based on Ivan Galamian and Dorothy Delay's teaching styles and tailoring it to the student's needs. For beginning to intermediate students, I focus my teaching on fundamental basics and techniques, tailoring the exercises and etudes based on the repertoire of each student. With more advanced students, I shift the emphasis towards music-making (color, character, pacing, phrasing), with a focus on efficient and effective combinations of sounding point, bow speeds, bow distribution and vibrato. For book methods, I typically suggest starting with "The Sassmannshaus Tradition: Early Start on the Violin, Volume 3" for young beginner students. For intermediate to Advanced students, I discuss with them on repertoire choices.
I believe in having a positive and healthy learning atmosphere in my studio as students are most focused and learn best with a positive mindset. My goal is to provide efficiency in violin practicing and using technical tools to help deliver musical ideas with precision. As Ivan Galamian (one of the greatest American pedagogists of the 20th century) quotes that "the key to facility and accuracy and, ultimately, to complete mastery of violin technique is to be found in the relationship of mind to muscles, that is, in the ability to make the sequence of mental command and physical response as quick as precise as possible".
