ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
  • Master of Music in Viola Performance, University of Massachusetts, Amherst
  • Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance, Eastman School of Music
Overview:

I'm a violist and music educator originally from Dover, Ohio. I'm currently a violist with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and have performed with ensembles across New England including the Boston Chamber Symphony, Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony, Colby Symphony Orchestra, Bates College Orchestra, 240 Strings, Jean's Playhouse, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I have also participated in numerous summer programs including the Credo Chamber Music Festival, Bowdoin Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and the College Light Opera Company.

EXPERIENCE

I hold a B.M. in Viola Performance from the Eastman School of Music and a M.M. in Viola Performance from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and have been actively teaching music for 12 years. During my studies at Eastman I taught private lessons to non-majors at The University of Rochester and spent a summer teaching as a counselor at The Credo Chamber Music Festival. Through the Chamber Music Fellowship Program at UMass, I taught non-music majors private lessons, coordinated and taught multiple chamber groups, ran scale and etude classes, and was the teacher’s assistant for the practicum orchestra, helping to both teach and conduct rehearsals for non-music majors. After Graduating from UMass I continued my teaching at Marlborough High School where I taught private lessons to violin, viola, cello, and bass students. During this time I recruited almost twenty students ranging from elementary to high school. In my two years at the district, I worked to inspire a higher degree of excellence among the students, leading multiple to place at state and district competitions. I was also the private viola teacher at Weston High School in Boston. In 2016 I accepted a position with the Bangor Symphony and moved to Penobscot County where I currently live and teach.

METHODS USED

I always strive to meet the needs of all my students while inspiring excellence, regardless of race, economic status, or educational background. In my lessons I work with students to give them the skills they need to navigate the difficulties of their instrument. I use a variety of teaching methods such as Schradieck, Galamian, Suzuki, and Kreutzer in order to give all of my students the most comprehensive music education possible. Lessons usually consist of work on scales and/or etudes, a main piece of repertoire appropriate to the student's level, and duets.

LESSON STYLE

Music is a discipline that requires the practical application of multiple core education subjects including Mathematics, History, Language Arts, and Science. Practicing and performing music helps students develop and expand their teamwork and communication skills and teaches students how to constructively self-critique as they progress towards their goals. Music also gives students the opportunity to express themselves and form lasting connections with other musicians. I love sharing my passion for music with my students.
