ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

MM, University of Southern California BM, Cal State University Northridge Performers' Certificate, University of Southern California

Overview:
It was more of an epiphany than a gradual choice which saw me take on the career of a musician. From a young age and onward, I always maintained an affinity and constant desire for music. In all this time nothing has ever proved so gratifying. No doubt I have various instructors to thank for this love, along with their respective academic institutions. From completing my undergraduate studies at Cal State Northridge, and finishing with graduate performance work at the wonderful University of Southern California, I more than owe it to the world of music education to give back however I can.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience first began on the marching band field for my local high school. It admittedly was a welcome challenge, yet it also helped me realize how important music education is to our lives. After that I found myself as an on-site substitute teacher at the Saturday Conservatory of Music in Pasadena, CA. These engagements were all the more based on individual curriculum, and I embraced my most valuable assets, being patience and understanding. That is, I'll adjust my pace to each student accordingly. To emphasize comfort in playing music is a critical goal of mine.
METHODS USED
The closer detail as to which type of brass pedagogy I employ is as follows. Correcting posture nearly goes here without saying, as does the simple good habits one needs to take care of their horn. Long tones are an immediate must to introduce, whether looking upon sheet music or not. Pertaining to beginners' method books, I am an equal proponent for both the Hal Leonard and Rubank's series. Both seem to encompass every beneficial gradient of difficulty level. Therein I will quickly identify which aspects of playing need the most work. If the student's band is preparing a piece, I'll pass on those corrections to whatever passage is applicable.
LESSON STYLE
My approach to teaching is, while quite lax, all about efficiency. Whatever the issue may be, I will not communicate outright disappointment if the student is clearly struggling. Such would be highly counterproductive. Beyond the sometimes opaque nature of helping improve one's physical dexterity on the instrument, the ultimate emphasis I wish to impress in this art form is enjoyment. Correct performance should never feel like a chore, and teaching deserves the same attitude and outcome. If nothing else, I gladly inquire to the student as to what they feel is lacking in their overall musical skill.
