Overview:
Electric and Acoustic guitar teacher specializing in Blues, Blues Rock, Rock n' Roll and Folk. As a Grammy nominated songwriter/producer I've traveled the world playing lead guitar and writing songs with superstar pop group Sister Sledge.("We Are Family") One of my recent Blues songs, "Cheatin' On Me", was licensed for use in a promo for the CBS hit show, "Criminal Minds". Other recording credits include: "Coming Back Home", "Pain" and the soon to be released "Lies and Secrets". In 2010, another one of my songs was nominated for a Grammy for it's inclusion on the CD "Healthy Food For Thought."
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching just after graduating college in 1978. Although I took some breaks to pursue other musical endeavors I always returned to teaching whenever possible. i always encourage students to find an area of music that they love and find out as much as they can about it. As soon as they learn the basics then we focus on that area which they feel most drawn to. I learned myself through a strong practice schedule so I try to impress the omportance of that to each student. I really love to see progress and strive to attain that with every student!
METHODS USED
Guitar lessons are customized for each student. Teaching style includes finger exercising, chord knowledge, learning songs/riffs, jamming - soloing , music theory and note reading (if desired). I usually use a basic method book to get the basics going then, depending on the student, tailor a course that they hopefully find interesting and fun. Every student is different in how they learn music so with that in mind I work with each of them according to their specific needs. I also try to expose my students to several playing styles so they will feel comfortable playing with other musicians no matter what the genre.
LESSON STYLE
Learning music can be fun! I try to find a middle ground that is both fun and gets to the heart of what makes music work. This includes music history, theory and listening to music by artists that the student admires. Although learning guitar is achieved mostly from hands on the instrument there are many valuable lessons that can be learned through encouraging the student to simply learn to listen to music, and, by listening I encourage them to be inquisitive and find out how and why the music they like sounds the way it does.
