Being the President of the Concert choir and secretary of the gospel choir during undergrad, I've had the privilege to teach the choir before the professors arrived. I've taught the childrens choir at my church for many years and I've interned for Stax Music Academy. I feel that lessons should be fun and not pressured for young people so I try my best to make my lessons just that! Regular and consistent practice is what I stress as a teacher. My high-school teacher use to say that practice makes perfect and now that I am in his shoes I now use that moto as well.
I like to start off teaching all my students the basics which is the musical staff. I believe that knowing what you are singing and/or playing makes a better musician. After that, I teach the scale and it advances from there, depending on the age. I love to have performances and recitals so the students and parents can see the students progress. The first recital may start off small like in the students' home. The student will sing 5 or 6 songs for beginners and from there more songs are added.
I love to see my students have the same love for music that I have. It's even more rewarding if I put that love for music in them. I like to set goals for my students from the first day of the lesson. And, by the end of the lesson, my goal is for my students to achieve the goals that we have set. I acknowledge ALL accomplishments regularly. Even if it is a small one because I believe all accomplishments should be acknowledge and appreciated. I make sure to get a feel for students and teach them what they would be eager to learn.
