Overview:

Hi there! My name is Taylor, I am a professional flutist who loves working with young flutists who are picking up the flute for the first time, high school students preparing for college auditions, or adult beginners who have found a passion for flute playing! Having the opportunity to perform in orchestras and pit ensembles for musicals and operas throughout Boston and New York has brought me so much joy, I look forward to passing my knowledge along to my students! Whether you are looking to be a concert soloist or just play for fun, I truly believe flute playing is for all!

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience started when I was a sophomore in high school -- I knew then I wanted to be in the music education field so I used my free time to work with flutists in the grades below me to help them prepare for their ensemble auditions and end-of-year playing exams. Since then I have earned my degree in music education and taught flutists of all levels! I have found that positive reinforcement and creating a safe and welcoming space has been the biggest factor in students' growth and how long they stick with the instrument.

METHODS USED

It is incredibly important to note that teaching is not a one-size-fits-all concept. When I first start working with a new student, together, we create a list of short and long term goals that they want to achieve and frequently revisit that list to make sure we are staying on track and revising it where needed. I have a series of method books and sheet music for students based on the level they enter on and encourage them to also find pieces they want to work on! Flute lessons can be so much fun, especially when is excited about what they're working on!

LESSON STYLE

Music is the response to human emotion and experience which is why I believe in using a human-first approach to teaching. At the start of each lesson, I incorporate simple stretches to help decrease physical tension and the chance of playing-related-injury. I use a great deal of positive reinforcement in lessons and help students move away from negative self-criticism to instead positively reflect on what went well about their performance. I also encourage students to record their lessons so they can hear their progress over time instead of reflecting on if they were able to play something perfectly the first time. I believe growth and musicianship take time and that through a positive and safe environment, flute playing can be made into a more enjoyable and long-term experience!

I started looking for an online flute teacher for my daughter when schools were let out due to COVID-19 in May 2020. This was her first year playing flute in middle school, and my goal was to prevent as much of the “summer slide” as I could with an online teacher. Truthfully, I was not sure how well online music lessons would be. Success in my mind was for my daughter not to move backwards in her abilities. Boy did we score when we found Ms. Taylor! Our entire experience working with Ms. Taylor has been uplifting and professional. Ms. Taylor is always on time and ready for class. She is organized and knows what she wants my daughter to accomplish each week. Right from the start, she helped me find an appropriate lessons book, but also supplements with her own music when needed. My daughter has not just maintained her abilities, but has made AMAZING progress over just a few months working with Ms. Taylor. When we moved from, “wow, this is hurting my ears!” to “wow, this is beautiful music!” after only a few lessons, I knew we had found a truly gifted teacher. It is now October 2020, school is back in session, and we have decided to continue working with Ms. Taylor once a week to strengthen my daughters in-school lessons. Ms. Taylor has been tremendously flexible in both helping my daughter with school flute assignments, but also continuing to help her grow well beyond. It is a wonderful feeling when my daughter comes from class with a smile and says “Listen to this mom!” … and it’s beautiful music. Ms. Taylor can teach your child new rhythms and concepts. She can teach your child to make a note without all of the extra “fuzzy/hissing” noises. She can teach your child to learn the correct pitch of the notes and SO much more all while online! I highly recommend Mr. Taylor to anyone looking to learn/advance in flute

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
