Shelly began teaching privately at Coast Band Music and in the Long Beach area. She addresses the individual needs of students such as basic vocal technique, aural skills, and the interpretation of song. It is her goal to help students discover the freedom in healthy singing and maintain the joy of singing. Shelly received a BM of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Cincinnati, CCM and a Masters in Opera Performance from California State University, Long Beach. Performance opportunities have included: soprano lead roles in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute; professional ensemble member of Opera Pacific and The Los Angeles Master Chorale; Soprano Section Leader for First Presbyterian Church of Santa Ana and Recitalist. Her abilities to sing in other genres has led to background singing for a rap artist, and gospel singer.
My teaching experience stems back to my undergraduate days when I taught during my summer breaks. After I finished my Masters I began teaching more steadily at Coach Band Music in Mission Viejo. After starting my family I developed my private studio from my home and I also became a vocal coach for Voice and Sound a voice studio located in Anaheim. I love helping singers of all levels because they help me be a better singer as well! My students develop am awareness of their voice they may have never experienced. I aim to keep it light but challenging. I aim to encourage and build up my singers confidence in themselves!
For all students I want to meet you where you are and build upon that. For ALL students i will ask you what your singing goals are. I will ask all singers to sing simple vocal warmups and we might only sing vocal warmups or work on technique the first couple of lessons so I can become familiar with your voice. I will introduce the basics of body alignment, how your breath for singing works, opening the vocal tract, breath management, vowels, etc. For younger students I will make sure we sing age appropriate repertoire but I am open to your personal preference. For adults I will make suggestions and I will be honest if I think the song is suitable for your voice.
From the academic stance, I would say that my teaching style lends itself to the Italian school of singing. But in all honesty, I just believe in the appearance of effortless and healthy singing! I don’t believe in a lot of jaw or over all body tension (over stiff or overly physical vocal methods). Singers are vocal athletes and maintaining good technique so you can have vocal longevity is key! When I teach I take care to watch the student and ask the student “how does that feel?” I want them to be thinking singers who don’t just follow what I say but question why and how they achieve their sound when it’s correct and not. I encourage recording their lessons so they can see their improvements! Believe me you don’t want to miss out on your hard work!
