Loyola university music therapy
Loyola university 4 year merit scholarship 1988
I am a piano and flute teacher with 10+ years under my belt. I teach Suzuki as well as traditional lessons. Several of my students have gone on to University studies in music. I teach in your home as well as in my home. I started out giving lessons in my home and giving recitals at a local church. I had maybe 10.students. Then my business blossomed to over 40 students when I taught at the International School of Minnesota in Den Prairie, MN. I also taught at the Trinity Lutheran Church and school in Waconia, MN.
I have over 10+ years of experience. like I stated above I studied under John Murphy at Loyola University as a Music Therapy student. I later transferred to the University of Minnesota and earned a Bachelor's degree in the Humanities. After graduation, I started giving lessons in piano and flute to about 10 students. Then as my business thrived, I took I instruction in Suzuki piano from Maria Rantapaa in St Paul, MN. I gave lessons at the International School of MN and Trinity Lutheran School in MN.
I use the Bastion books for children and Suzuki training for eartraining. SUzuki only for 3 to 4 year Olds who don't know how to read yet. I use psychological approaches since In trained in music therapy. For Suzuki students WE pretend there's a tissue paper on the keys and I as them to pick up the tissue while pressing the key down. This helps them navigate the keys and builds technique without cramping their fingers. While doing this, I teach them Old Macdonald Had A Farm on the keys in sixteenth notes picking up the tissue on each note. There is no music read. It is strictly by ear. When they get older I teach them the basics of music theory and how to read music.
I don't push the students too hard so they won't want to quit. If they want to move along in the books faster that's great! again my teaching style is Suzuki by ear for 3 to 4 year Olds and traditional for the older ones. Its important to have the parent to learn along with the child for Suzuki so they can practice at home. Each Suzuki lesson is 15 minutes twice a week so it takes dedication. My style is laid back. I do not yell at the students. That's just a waste of time and energy and makes the child want to quill. Gentle urging is my style.
