Consistent practice is more important than lengthy practice. While the results of your practice will increase with the time put in, practicing for even 5 minutes a day is better than skipping a day of practice. Practicing on just the mouthpiece is some of the most meaningful activities we do and this can be accomplished in under 5 minutes a day. More advanced students are expected to put in more time. I started playing the alto saxophone in 5th grade and immediately fell in love with making music and sharing it with others. . I love to perform in concert bands, jazz bands, saxophone quartets, small chamber groups, and as a soloist. What I like to do is find out what my students know about music and then work from there. For instrumental I start with basics and play through scales to see how they play and how they can improve. For students that are younger or completely new to music, we would start with very basic general music terms and would become very close to the instrument of choice knowing the parts, how sound works with the instrument and how to properly play the instrument (close to the Suzuki method). my instructions are easy to follow no matter the age or ability level.
