For beginners, I find it best to nurture creativity. In my experience, beginners struggle to see progress they make because they dont understand the essential functions of their instrument in the music. When teaching, I primarily focus on the ability to play without premeditation. This not only generates the feeling of speedy progress, but, allows students to create their only sound and feel confident in their playing. To keep the student engaged in a lesson I always start with what the student wants to do first for about half of the lesson then stitch half way through to a professional lesson format to ensure progress is retained and homework is given at the end.
