Bachelor Degree: Bob Jones University
I am a creative and engaging flute and piano teacher who is passionate about sharing my love of music with students of all ages and backgrounds. I've been playing the flute for 15 years and the piano for 17. In high school, I fell thoroughly in love with classical music through my private lessons, playing in Greenville County Youth Orchestras' Young Artist Orchestra, and studying chamber music at Greenville's Fine Arts Center. I decided to continue studying music in college and graduated from Bob Jones University with my Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance in 2020. Having the ability to play beautiful music has been one of the greatest sources of joy in my life and I'm excited to share this joy with you!
My teaching experience started when I was 10 years old and my younger sister, who always wanted to everything I did, asked me to teach her piano. I started her on piano then and in high school started her on flute. In university I got experience with more ages and was able to teach at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels during my pedagogy practicum. Since graduating, I've been teaching professionally in the Greenville area. I love helping students gain musical skills and pursue their personal interests, and I'm always looking for opportunities to teach new students.
Students thrive with lessons that are individualized to focus on their personal goals and interests. To give students this personalized experience, I combine standard flute or piano methods with modern or classical music that interests them. For beginning flute students, we start out with the Blocki Flute Method, an award-winning method that combines technique, fun new pieces, classical adaptations, and duets to help students learn both the low and high registers quickly and have fun doing it. For more advanced students, we choose etudes, technique books, and classical and modern pieces based on the student's playing experience and goals. For beginning piano students, we work through Faber's Piano Adventures and add supplemental music as desired. I also believe it's important for students to understand the music that they play, so I incorporate basic music theory and encourage students to compose their own music. I also help prepare students to take advantage of performance opportunities such as recitals, competitions, and auditions for band and orchestra.
I love seeing my students thrive! Want to play for fun? I'll help you build the skills you need to play the music you love and make sure you have fun throughout the process. Looking to study classical flute more seriously? I can help you design a regimen that will take your technical skills to the next level and pick repertoire that is the perfect blend of enjoyable and challenging. A typical lesson will start out with some warm-ups to get the music flowing. We'll then listen to whatever five note patterns, scales, or technical exercises the student is working on. Then we move on to the fun stuff! Solos, duets, student compositions, and more, we'll hear everything else the student is working on. To close the lesson, I'll update the student's lesson notebook, where I write down what we're working on so that they can reference it during daily practice. Interested in learning with me?
