Overview:
I'm an enthusiastic teacher who loves sharing my passion for music with violin and viola students of all ages! I've been playing since the age of 5 when I started with Suzuki violin. After my freshman year studying violin at NYU, I decided to pursue viola because I fell in love with its deep, dark sound. In 2009/10 I took a break from my master's at IU to perform in a string quartet on board a cruise ship. Over 7 months, I traveled from Alaska to Antarctica performing and exploring! I received and my Doctor of Musical Arts and an Artist Diploma from the University of Miami.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private violin lessons in high school and I have continued to teach ever since. While studying at NYU, I enjoyed working with public school students as a Teaching Artist through the Brooklyn Philharmonic outreach program. At the University it Miami I took pedagogy coursework and taught through the Frost School of Music’s preparatory and MusicReach programs. I’ve been an instructor with various additional community programs and a Teaching Artist with the Miami Music Project since 2015, leading ensemble classes, teaching sectionals and private lesson students.
METHODS USED
For young beginning students, fun and creativity is very important! Consistency is also necessary. Regular, thoughtful practice leads to the mastery of basic concepts and allows students to make progress. I believe in a holistic approach to teaching as body awareness and setup directly influence facility on the instrument and the ability to play with ease and comfort. I want my students to grow and learn as both musicians and people! I want my students to have fun and success with their musical endeavors!
LESSON STYLE
I believe that every individual is different and possesses unique strengths and weaknesses. As such, I tailor my approach to meet each student's learning style and personality. I work with students to set clear goals based on their specific interests and needs. I love celebrating my students’ accomplishments and helping them find their voice. I find it very important to meet each student where they are, to turn weaknesses into strengths, and to use music learning as a vehicle to inform not only their skill set on the instrument but also their development as a person.
