ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Bachelors Degree Jazz Commercial Music Five Towns College NY

Overview:
I'm originally from New York and moved to the bay area 4 years ago. I have been playing music since I was about 5 or 6. I started early on with guitar lessons and playing trumpet through grade school. I went to see the Gypsy Kings at radio city music hall when I was about 9 or 10 with my parents. While there wasn't a drummer performing at the show, the group of guitar players where incredibly rhythmic. it made people get up and move as if they almost couldn't help it. I remember at that moment really wanting to be able to have that influence on people. It became an obsession from there. I have since had the opportunity to perform in some legendary clubs like The bitter End, kenny's castaways, and in major venues like Lincoln Center in NYC. Every experience has left me with the drive to keep people moving and making music together. Teaching has been one of the most effective an rewarding ways to keep this going.
EXPERIENCE
i've been playing drums for 17 years. I am originally from New York where I worked as a drummer, educator, and then a professional in the music products industry. I graduated from Five Towns in 2009 with a bachelors degree in Jazz Commercial Music. Durning my time in college I expanded my musical palette adding swing, Latin, concert mallet percussion, drumline, and afro-cuban. I was also working with 3 original bands touring the trio-state area and releasing independent albums. In 2011 I began a career in the music products industry working for Brands like D'Addario Strings, Evans Drumheads, Promark drumsticks, EMG guitar pickups, and Keith McMillen Instruments.
METHODS USED
We will began with two drumsticks and a pad. Core fundamentals are the building blocks for everything we do behind the kit. We will first need to get the mechanics working before we drive the car. How to hold the sticks, how to strike a drum, and the basic of reading rhythms, will be the focus of the first 2-3 lessons. It is at this point we can start putting the two together. We will start from a variety of exercises from the book Stick Control working the hands and feet. Then a variety of beginner drum set books from Chet Deboe to work the 3 and 4 limb independence . I work from a variety of drum books depending on the student and their goals as a player. My goal with every student I teach is to be in any musical situation be it jazz, rock, or show tunes and be able to play confidently.
LESSON STYLE
I began teaching in college and focused on motivating younger players to continue to exploring the instrument. I noticed early on that so many young students would stop showing up to lesson after just a few weeks. My goal has always been to expose every student to the potential their instrument has. A lot of this comes with making the lessons reinvent to "Real life". During drum lessons I often have a guitar or bass on me so we can play Example 23 from page 10 in a real musical setting. I put just as much priority on reading and fundamentals as I do improvisation and creativity. My job is to have each student leave every lesson with something new they are excited about.
