Degrees / Training / Special Info:

MEd, Columbia International University, Curriculum and Instruction (with emphasis in Music Education from the University of South Carolina) BM, University of South Carolina, Music Education - Instrumental

Overview:

Hello! My name is Regina and I love teaching music! It was clear to my parents at a young age that I loved music. Prior to starting classical guitar lessons at the age of five, I was performing in children's choirs. I started taking piano lessons at the age of eight and, throughout my middle and high school years, played trumpet and flute in concert and marching band. I graduated with a Bachelors in Music Education from the University of South Carolina in 2011. Although I was an instrumental "band track" major, piano was my primary instrument and I had the opportunity to be both in performance and pedagogy studios during my undergraduate years. I also minored in trumpet and received a concentration in general elementary music. This allowed me the opportunity to have a two part internship: one in K-5 general elementary music and one in middle school band. In 2014, I earned a Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Columbia International University. During this time, I was able to take Masters level music education courses through the University of South Carolina to receive a music education emphasis. My years in graduate school gave me the opportunity to not only tutor, but to start my own private music studio in 2012.

EXPERIENCE

Along with music, it was clear to my mom that I had a passion for teaching at a young age. From sitting down and trying to teach my best friend to read at the age of four, to trying to teach my mom the piano at the age of ten, I loved to help others learn. During my high school years, my band director would let me help with the middle school band, which allowed me to realize that I could put my two passions together in one job! Although I knew I wanted to be a music major since middle school, I knew by my junior year of high school that I wanted to be a music teacher. And I have not wavered in that decision since! My more formal teaching experience dates back to 2012, when I had more availability during graduate school to start my own music studio, which I still run today with students from my church. I also work as an independently contracted music teacher at two local studios, one since 2013 and the other since 2015. Both of these experiences have been invaluable and have allowed me to further develop what I consider to be the "basics" for all of the instruments that I teach.

METHODS USED

For young beginners on piano (ages 4-6), I use Faber's "My First Piano Adventure." For beginners ages 7 and up, I use both Faber's "Piano Adventures" and the Alfred's Piano Library. In addition to the lesson materials, theory is a crucial part of music study and a part of musical study that I require. As students grow in their ability, I find out what their interests are and we start to incorporate in standard repertoire and other songs that the student desires to learn. For students playing band instruments, I use the "Standard of Excellence" series as the lesson book and supplement in etudes from my own music library. As the student grows in ability, we start to work more from etude and solo books.

LESSON STYLE

Having the opportunity each day to work with students who show interest in music and who are making progress keeps me moving forward! I consider each student as an individual and realize that all of my students are not going to move at the same pace. I not only follow the students pacing if they seem to be stressed at the pace of information, but I allow them to participate in setting their short-term and long-term goals. For example, if a student enjoys theory, I allow that to be a larger part of the lesson so that they feel their musical needs are being developed.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
