BM, University of Tennessee, Piano Pedagogy and Literature
In 1992, I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy and Literature. For several years after graduation I was a staff accompanist for the University of Tennessee, rehearsing and performing with both faculty and students. I have accompanied multiple award winning choirs and have performed in New York and Europe. My spare time is spent playing in a pop band with my wife.
When I was in college I started teaching at a local elementary school in their after school program. It was a great experience and reinforced my desire to become a full time piano instructor. After graduation I took a position as the Group Lesson Coordinator for a major piano dealer for two years. I have maintained my own teaching studio for the past 25 years instructing as many as fifty students each week. My students always receive high marks in festivals and competitions for their musicality and solid piano technique.
For children who are just starting I use the Hal Leonard All-in-One Piano Lessons because it has pieces with a variety of styles and moods. For teens and adults, I prefer to use the Hal Leonard Adult Piano Method. Both courses offer great duets and online accompaniment tracks to help with steady rhythm and ensemble experience. In addition, lessons are customized according to student desires and needs. Working together on favorite tunes is always inspiring for the students. I also use selected online programs to aid in ear training, sight reading, and composition.
Encouraging my students to become true musicians is at the heart of my teaching. Development of a warm tone and technical mastery of the keyboard is where I start. Solid music theory, ear training, and exposure to many different styles of music prepare students for any pieces they are particularly interested in learning. Playing in an ensemble setting (whether that be playing piano duets, participating as a keyboard player in a band, or playing along with accompaniment tracks) is always promoted. We always have a lot of fun along the way!
